About this place
Dhamek Stupa is the most iconic monument in Sarnath and one of Buddhism's holiest pilgrimage sites. Built during the reign of Emperor Ashoka and later expanded, the stupa stands about 43.6 meters high. It commemorates the location where Lord Buddha delivered the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, introducing the Noble Eightfold Path. Visitors should maintain silence, respect the sacred surroundings, and avoid climbing the monument.
